Power Tactics in Hypnosis: How to Use Status to Influence the Hypnotic Subject

Power tactics that are used in hypnosis have been used for many, many years; they are strategies that are key in the influence and persuasion of those around you.  These tactics will help you to change the lives of those around you for the better, as well as your own. As you learn how to use power tactics you will want to keep in mind the different concepts of hypnotic language foundations, rapport skills and signal recognition skills.  Keep these in the back of your mind because as you learn power tactics you will want to start to combine them all to create a powerful way of being a hypnotist. It is important to realize that at some point you will want to converge all the information you are learning in to smooth flowing patterns that will enhance your overall ability to be a great hypnotist. Power tactics, which are very old and very useful, in hypnosis are the strategies that allow you to become the authority in a person’s trance.  They enable you to take on the role of high status, which is our first tactic. The power tactic of ‘High Status’ is a role you will take on with your subject in order to get them to follow your suggestions.  It is important to note here that high status has nothing to do with your person; it is not about wealth or moral judgment.  It is simply a place in the set of roles you take on in society everyday. High status, equal status and low status are all different roles we play within the relationships we have.  Some people are natural high status people; they are comfortable and are good at taking control of the conversation.  Others are low status people and are more of a passenger in conversations, they chime in when necessary but other than that mostly agree with what is being said by others. The different roles we choose varies depending on the people we are with and the situations we are in.  It is important for you as a hypnotist to understand these roles and know when you need to play that of high or low status.  The best part of choosing a role to play after you understand them is that it gives you the most flexibility in conversations you have and the people you are working with. Now of course as a hypnotist you will want to be in a role of high status, this will make you the authority figure.  As the authority figure people will want to do what you suggest and follow your advice. The problem with this is that some people are not flexible in the types of people they feel comfortable dealing with.  There are people who are comfortable being low status and others who are only comfortable in high status. You will need to determine what type of person you are dealing with to determine which role you will need to initially take on.  I say initially because you will want to eventually be of high status in your hypnotic relationships. However there will be time you need to start as a low status person.  If you are dealing with a person who distrusts or dislikes those of high status you will take on a low status role until the person trusts and likes you.  They need to feel comfortable with you. When you take on the role of low status you will be less assertive, feed them information subconsciously and set up the correct frames to gain their trust. When you take on the role of a high status you will need to include two distinct concepts in your authority role.  These are your body language and behavior, which include your tonality.  These are the two things that will signal others as to what status you are in, they will cause a difference in how you are perceived by the other people around you. When you give off signals of a high status people will respond to you more powerfully.  This is a good sign but it is also important to remember the situations where you need to play low status and change your signals to accommodate that need.  This is something you will have to do for as long as it takes until those around you are comfortable dealing with a high status person. It is also possible to need to change status when dealing with the same person depending on the situation you are in.  This is a powerful tactic in order to break down resistance. Now how do you become a high status person?  What mannerisms does a high status person give off?  You have encountered them countless times, and more than likely interact with high status people all the time. People who are in high status role are those who send out signals of relaxed manner.  They are very comfortable with themselves and are confident in the things they do and say.  Some distinguishing characteristics of high status people are easy to spot. High status individuals exhibit Calm Movements.  These people are calm and unhurried; they do not rush through their actions, words or thoughts.  And those around them respond to these people as if they are in control of the situations they are in. If you goal is to be a high status role in your hypnotic relationships then you need to take on these behaviors.  It is important to avoid being jumpy, jerky or nervous.  Many low status people will have repetitive movements or ticks, they will wring their hands or bounce a leg constantly, and these are behaviors to avoid. Another high status signal is the way you use the space around you.  High status people use their space widely.  Low status individuals take up as little space as possible by crossing their arms and legs and often sitting in corners. High status people will use large motions, stand in a room, sit in a room, and even lean back in chairs.  High status people are also not intimidated by occasionally invading others private space.  They will give you a pat on the back or unsuspected hug, they simply feel comfortable naturally. The third signal of a high status person is that they will expose the vulnerable parts of their body.  As humans we have vulnerable part we are constantly subconsciously aware of; these being the throat, abdomen and groin.  When we feel threatened we will unknowingly protect these areas.  We may cross our arms or legs, even if the attack is only a verbal one we will attempt to protect ourselves. Those in high status will leave these areas of the body open or exposed.  They feel confident enough in their defenses to not be worried.  Often they are so comfortable in their environments that they simply feel no danger of an attack. The fourth and final signal of a high status person is steady eye contact.  One of the most interesting things about human beings is that you can often tell exactly what emotion they are having by looking at their eyes.  The eyes are directly connected to the brain and therefore give away many clues to your thinking. Low status individuals will have nervous eyes, darting around, unable to focus on one thing for too long.  High status people will be able to fix their eyes on something; a person, place, thing or point in space without a problem.  They will have an unwavering steady gaze that is the signature of their calm state of mind. In order to take on a high status role you must study and embody these traits. In doing this people who are not intimidated by others of high status will feel more comfortable around you. You will find they are even more willing to open themselves up to you in many different situations. HypnosisBest Holiday Gifts

The Role of Hypnotic Rapport in Hypnosis

Dec 11th, 2009 by

Hypnosis is a deep and complicated process where the hypnotist and subject must have a wide rapport to support.  When you participate in conducting a hypnotic trance your unconscious will be opened to them.  Because of this it is important to have the experience you wish them to partake in at the forefront of your mind when starting the rapport. Rapport is not a term generated just for use in hypnosis.  It happens with everyone you come into conversational contact with.  And the rapport you develop with your subjects is instrumental in conducting successful conversational hypnosis. Hypnosis is anything but a casual relationship between two people.  It is a deep connection that must be supported with good rapport.  Anything you feel will unconsciously be projected upon the person you are trying to hypnotize.  Because of this it is paramount that you learn to take your rapport skills out of the range of normal and beyond. Hypnotic rapport is a time tested relationship.  It has been present since people have been in existence.  It is not fully understood and may never be, but it is very powerful. Rapport is powerful in the sense that anytime a person around you experiences a trance they will inevitably take on a deeper connection with you and your unconscious mind.  This deepens the trust between the participants and offers a sense of comfort in your company. Going first, or ‘go first’ concept is an important one to become highly familiar with.  In ‘go first’ you as the hypnotist must first enter the environment and experience you want your subject to have. The reason you need to enter the experience before your hypnotic subject is so they will pick that experience up from your subconscious as they are in trance.  Because every time a person goes into trance around you they develop an unconscious connection with you, if you have the experience at the forefront of your mind they will bring it back with them after the hypnosis is concluded. As you begin to make hypnotic connections with other people you will be unconsciously exploring their mind as they will be making a connection with your unconscious as well.  This is a powerful part of hypnosis.  It allows each person to explore thoughts and ideas they never knew they had until that precise moment. An example of this is prevalent in our everyday lives.  We have all met people that we have a difficult time connecting with.  You may have the same conversations over and over with little success in a real connection.  It may seem that there is some sort of barrier up between the two of you.  You never quite get past the small talk questions because you are not comfortable enough to advance into a deeper relationship. This relationship is skewed because on an unconscious level these people are sub-communicating their sense of distrust and non ability to be comfortable around you.  This atmosphere within in a person you are trying to connect with will shut down your thoughts and ideas.  This will happen even before those thoughts and ideas have even had a chance to properly develop and come to your conscious. On the other hand you probably meet people that you seem to have an instant connection with.  In these situations it can seem that the thoughts and ideas are flowing from you endlessly.  Ideas you never even realized you had come easily and seamlessly carry your listener.  You are charismatic with these people, your ideas are good, and they come out well. Split personality?   No. This is the way most people work.  Those who are confident, comfortable and trusting in themselves often send out unconscious signals to others that produce the same effect in others.  People who are not sure of themselves or comfortable will unconsciously cut off successful communications before they have had a chance to even try. In hypnosis you will want to have the effect of the second situation.  If you have a good rapport with your subjects and they feel comfortable and trusting around you they will be able to easily open up to you.  You can aid in this process by making the mental environment even more comfortable by using the ‘go first’ method in hypnosis. It is important to remember that hypnosis is no casual relationship.  You want your clients and the people around you to feel as if they have known you for years and can open up to you anywhere. Developing and instant rapport with a complete stranger is a skill that will attribute to your success as a hypnotist. This is established through good rapport. Good rapport can be established through different methods such as the ‘go first’ method. Learn more Learn Hypnosis WP Autoblog Plugin

The Law of Reversed Effect in Hypnosis: How to Use the Hypnotic Challenge

Dec 10th, 2009 by

As you dive into the deep art of conversational hypnosis you will find that there are a set of Stealth Tactics that can be used in order to bypass the critical factor in people’s minds.  Stealth Tactics are used in a way that either will be unnoticed by your subject or will be too complicated for them to really grasp the objective you have in mind. The main point in Stealth Tactics is that this is a way of disguising what you are doing in order to defeat the critical factor and get your message through a person’s resistance.  Because these tactics are a little on the sneaky side you will want to be sure to exercise the best judgment in using them.  If you do not it is likely that your listener’s unconscious will start to distrust or dislike you in the actions you are taking. The first Stealth Tactic we will discuss is the Law of Reversed Effect; it will explain how we should be using something called the Hypnotic Challenge.  The Law of Reversed Effect is simply that the harder you try to do something the more likely it is that you will fail.  This is not to be confused with persistence.  It is not the more your try to do a thing it is the harder you try to do a thing that will result in failure. There is a reason this failure will take place and that is that our conscious minds work in a way that it executes doing things.  Our unconscious mind acts on the things we decide to do and works out the navigation of how to actually do them.  For instance you decide to read a book, you read the words consciously but your unconscious deciphers them and adds the emotions and feelings that accompany the words. This is important to understand as it is the basis of why the Law of Reversed Effect works.  The Law of Reversed Effect works because our conscious mind is trying to do something that we would normally use our unconscious mind for.  The conscious mind works on the simple things, things that only require 5 – 9 steps to accomplish.  The unconscious mind makes the more complicated functions of life run more smoothly as it can handle much more complicated procedures. It is only when the conscious mind starts to get into the unconscious mind’s territory that failure begins to take place.  When the conscious mind starts to interfere with the fluid motions of the unconscious the result is failure. Now this brings us to the Law of Imagination, which is yet another reason for failure.  The best way to describe this law is to give you an example.  We are all humans and in that we want things.  If you think of something you want but should not have you start to set yourself up for the failure in this law. The way this works is when you state that you do not want something or you shouldn’t do something, you are reminded of it often as you think about how you shouldn’t have it.  Usually if you want something the thought of it will bring a mirage of good experiences to mind.  If you like cake the taste, if you like cars the excitement of owning a new car. These are good feelings and experiences that you relate to the thing you are trying to avoid.  The more you think about preventing yourself from getting the thing you shouldn’t have the more positive associations are ignited in your head.  Eventually you will be overloaded by the positive images of the thing you shouldn’t have and your unconscious will give in and get the thing you shouldn’t have. Now in this comes the Hypnotic Challenge.  In the Hypnotic Challenge you are going to be setting your listener up for failure by using the Law of Imagination and the Law of Reversed Effect.  The Hypnotic Challenge is a way that you will ask someone to try to fulfill a suggestions and you watch to see how they fail. A classic hypnotist would do this through suggestibility tests.  The test is not within the suggestions themselves it lies within the challenge and failure to complete that challenge attached to the end of the test.  When a person try’s and fails a challenge you have set before them they will unconsciously start to believe that resistance is not within their means. As long as the listener believes that resistance is not within them to control, that control will be given over to the hypnotist.  As long as they continue to believe this one thing it will continue to ring true for them.  Now all the suggestions you make will easily flow to the unconscious because there is no resistance in place to stop and examine the suggestions. This is where the reversed effect comes in; by showing a person that they have no resistance and that they will fail you have actually, in a very sneaky way, passed up the barrier that causes failure.  They have no resistance; they failed because you set it up that way, now they will believe they have no control over failure.  Because they believe this you now have the power to avoid all failure in your objective as you have bypassed all their resistance. The best way to use this law in conversational hypnosis is to use a linguistic trick by using words that imply “try”.  “Try” itself implies failure and to imply the failure is to stack the odds in your favor that they will actually fail at a preconceived task. Now let’s review this as there is a lot of action going on in this Stealth Tactic.  The Law of Reversed Effect says that the harder you try to do a thing the more likely it is you will fail. To put this law in action you need to require that the subject make a conscious interference with a normally unconscious process.  You will add to this basing the odds in your favor by asking them to complete a task it is likely they will fail at.  As you do this you will use subtle hints to imply they will fail, such as the word try or something with a like meaning. All of these steps will cause a conflict in their resistance to your suggestion. The critical factor and resistance will be completely bypassed in the process. Learn Hypnosis

How Does Hypnotism Effect People

Nov 4th, 2009 by

There are a number of myths surrounding hypnosis and how it works. Some people still believe it’s a form of mind control and brainwashing. I can assure you, it’s not. Hollywood would have us believe that a hypnotist can control you and make you do things that are against your will. Again, not even remotely true.

In reality, hypnosis is not a mystical, mind-control voodoo that you see on TV and stage, but one of the most effective tools for a positive change.

Hypnosis is a natural, normal state of mind that feels similar to daydreaming. It’s a deep state of relaxation and concentration, wherein the mind is always conscious and aware, but more open to the power of suggestion. It works by relaxing the mind and the body, giving you the ability to bypass the conscious, criticizing part of your mind and reveal the matters lying in the subconscious, which may be the cause of many problems.

Hypnosis has been successfully used for reducing stress, eliminating bad habits, overcome phobias, negative thoughts, suppressed emotions, and to deal with many other psychological and also physiological problems.

There is absolutely nothing unnatural about it, we all naturally go in and out of hypnotic states throughout every day. Examples: daydreaming, losing track of time while driving, reading a really engrossing book, playing an instrument, painting, playing a sport (often referred to as being in the zone), and many, many more.

Can everyone be hypnotized? Virtually every person has the natural capacity for response to hypnosis. However nobody can be effected by it against their will. According to the WHO, more than 90% of the general population can be hypnotized.

Although most people can be effected, they vary in their degree of responsiveness, which is called their hypnotizability or hypnotic susceptibility. Hypnotic susceptibility is measured on scales that rate people of their responsiveness to suggestions. People are rated as high, medium, or low. Most people are at least moderately hypnotizable.

There are, of course, people who can not be hypnotized. Those are people with mental difficulties or extremely sub-normal intelligence (low IQ), senile people, people under the influence of drugs or alcohol, young children (under the age of 5), people who are afraid of hypnosis or simply those who are unwilling to cooperate and follow instructions.

It’s a common myth that only the weak minded can be hypnotized. The truth is actually quite the opposite. The best hypnotic subjects are those of above average intelligence who can very easily go into trance due to their sharp concentrating capabilities. You do, in fact, need a reasonable amount of intelligence to be hypnotized.

To summarize, hypnosis is natural, safe, and effective process that can improve your life by enabling you to see things in a new way. You just have to have the desire to do so. For more information on hypnosis and how it can help you, visit How Does Hypnotism Workkeyword software

Hypnotic Relaxation[three Different Programmes]

HYPNOTIC RELAXATION

**************************** Hypnotic psychotherapy is the oldest of all psychotherapies. People who even not hear the name of hypnotism may be well versed with the name “hypnotism”. This is because of the visual medias, which presented hypnotic seen. We should say that the concept of hypnotic therapy and hypnotizing are most misunderstood among all other psychotherapies because of the afore said reason; but it is very effective way to remove problems in the subconscious and I would like to mention here what is the effect of hypnotic suggestions. Two cases of hypnotic induction in my clinic and different methods people use under this broad connotation of hypnotism are also mentioned.

What is hypnotism?

————————-

We know that man has given special inherent qualities than all other living beings, which are, intellectual ability, morality and will power. These qualities help man to aim at and to work for the betterment of others, for the betterment of living beings, and for the nature in which we live. To join together for the common welfare, give suggestions for that and act according to a direction for more goodness. In this we have said, give suggestions, wishfully at for the betterment and join together, all these are in a way foundations of hypnotism. Bernheim says” “I define hypnotism as the introduction of a peculiar physical condition which increases the susceptibility to suggestion”. The hypnotic form is again called alternative form of consciousness. This alternate form of consciousness is very similar to sleep. So we call it as hypnotic sleep.

Imagine a small child sleep when she hears her mother singing. In the song of the mother the child get a suggestion to sleep. In the song of the mother the child get a suggestion to sleep. And this suggestion may not be that much effective in the child while she hears other person singing. Imagine a situation while you go to church. There the preacher is delivering a monotonous and dull message. You may start sleeping. Why you are sleeping? You may tell that one may sleep while he is tired. This is not applicable to a person who hears a message in the church. Here the person who sleeps is a passive hearer only. He has no involvement and this makes him feel boring. So he tells himself that you have nothing to do and the message is boring so you sleep. This is self hypnosis. You may have experienced that you have to go to a distant place early in the morning. You will adjust alarm of the clock and sleep, but before you hear the sound of alarm you may rise up. Here in all this we see the effect of self-hypnosis.

In a hypnotic treatment session the therapist and the client enters in to a deep and special kind of relationship. In psychotherapy this kind of relationship is called the therapeutic relationship.

We need sleep and at the time of our sleep our body and mind are relaxed. The rapid eve movement stage or the dream stage is the time when our mind is being relaxed. At the time of dream feelings in our subconscious moves to the conscious. This is done not as the direct image. Thing is that in that way our emotions are relaxed and that is what happening in the hypnotic relaxation too.

There may be people who suspect that this is against to the Christian faith. The work of Jesus Christ can be divided as, preaching, teaching and healing. Those who came with physical problems to Christ went back healed not only physically but psychologically and spiritually too. Jesus taught, “Everything is possible to those who believe”.

Before going deep into the concept of hypnotism I should narrate one or two examples and this will help you to understand the therapy. Names and situations I tell here are different.

Case1: -

Saji 23 years old was bright in his high school class but he failed in BSC. His parents scolded him for the same reason. Once one of his friends ridiculed him and for this they quarreled each other. When his parents’ heard about this they questioned. Saji wanted to have a job, but he couldn’t find. Once his father had a quarrel with his neighbor and this ended in physical aggression. Saji intervened in the fight. So he became guilty of the act that made a change in his behavior. Aggressive nature and sudden retaliation, all gave him a bad name. Slowly he lost his sleep. Once he felt as if his right arm and leg paralyzed. He couldn’t walk or do anything without the help of others. Treatment in different places made no good. Then his parents brought him for a prayer meeting that a minister prays for him. I was there and they requested me to talk to him. We talked and gave him a hypnotic relaxation. As O. Anna patient of J. Bruer and S. Freud said, “this was a talking cure” Saji also got a talking cure from the same conversion hysteria. Even in the first session we got a sign of cure.

Case2: -

Emily 27 years is unmarried and sometimes she feels difference in her body and mind. When this occurs she forgets everything even her name. It happened that a long time back a women who was neighbor of her expired and Emily says in her trance that she is the died person. Amnesia problem makes her forget certain things. Her neighbors told that this is because of evil spirit and this worsens her problem. Her marriage proposals are cancelled. By hypnotism she got above the problems and cured.

We can say that people under go hypnotism can be categorized in to three groups 1. The first group remembers everything that happened in the session. Every suggestion is remembered. 2. The second group does not remember everything but they will say that they heard the therapists talk. 3. The third group may no5t be able to remember what is happened in the session. In my experience some clients express indifference at the first stage and then go in to the sleep. We cannot hypnotize 100% people. To my understanding there are three kind of hypnotic relaxation programme.

1. Mental Relaxation Programme

In prayer, meditation, or mass hypnotism therapists, religious leaders or experienced persons do this. They give suggestion to one person or a group of people to boost mental energy and or spiritual energy. In different religions people use it in different way.

2. Hypnotic Treatment.

Here a therapist comes to an agreement with a client to help him in his discomfort, adopt techniques of personal hypnotism for the betterment of the client. Mostly this is treatment based.

3. Past Life Regression Therapy.

This is in the style of hypnotic therapy, but most religions do not agree with this practice. In this, a therapist act as a medium and he leads the client to arouse his psychic level to enter into a mind vibration of a person lived long ago. Then the client identifies himself with that person to find answer to his questions of maladjustment. The therapist explains that the maladjustment is because of those person’s vibrations. This is not advisable as far as I understand this therapy. This is based on the “karma” theory of Hinduism.

Hypnotism has immense potentials. So we can use it and develop it, by continuous research. Systematic mass relaxation programme is very good and it can be used by different religions for spiritual and mental awakening.
