Will Hypnotic Suggestion Suppress Your Appetite?

Hypnotism, thanks to television and movies, the very word conjures up the picture of a beady-eyed hypno-therapist swinging a watch and chanting, “You are getting sleepy.”
Do an Internet search, and you will find hundreds of thousands of web pages devoted to the subject, especially weight loss hypnosis. Unfortunately, many websites that sell hypnosis programs for weight loss make wild, unsubstantiated claims. I’ve been in professional practice since 1978. So I think that I’m larger than equipped to set the record straight on weight loss hypnosis.
First of all, posthypnotic suggestion is a tool, just like a scalpel is a tool. Just as varied surgeons have diversified skill levels in the use of a scalpel, diversified hypnotists have different skill levels in the use of hypnotherapy for weight loss. And to complicate the matter, there are many noteworthy forms and types of posthypnotic suggestion.
Here are some of the assertions about weight loss hypnosis that I’ve seen on websites, along with the truth of the matter:
“Hypnosis for weight loss will speed up your metabolism.” If you want to know the total truth, the fact of the matter is that weight loss hypnosis cannot directly speed up your metabolism. But it can be very compelling at helping to program your subconscious with increased motivation to exercise, and that can increase your metabolic rate. Similarly, suggestibility to speed up the metabolism for quick weight loss can be effected by programming the unconscious to motivate the intake of increased amounts of protein, because that intake will step up the metabolic rate.
Posthypnotic suggestion will make you slim down. This is false. But weight loss hypnosis can be used to help eliminate your appetite, so that you eat less, and eating less can help you to get rid of weight.
The average person’s cravings and urges are triggered by two unconscious programs:
A. When you pair eating with any other behavior, the other behavior will trigger cravings for food and a strong urge to eat. This is called a conditioned response. For example, if you eat when you watch a movie, you will automatically get an urge to eat each time you go to the movies.
B. When you feel tense, you feel a strong urge to put food into your mouth for relaxation. This is the result of training that you received as a baby. When you got cranky, your mother or father put a bottle in your mouth. You got distracted, relaxed, and probably fell asleep. Now when you get cranky (anxious or tense), you feel compelled to put something into your mouth for relaxation and pleasure.
C. There is a third unconscious program that is present for some people. It’s called emotional eating. Emotional eating takes place when an individual is motivated to make him or herself fat, because by being fat they will protect themselves in some way.
For example, if someone got their heart broken in a relationship, their unconscious will drive them into a behavior that would prevent them from getting their heart broken again. Example: They are motivated to get fat to keep them out of new relationships, because that will eliminate the possibility of another broken heart.
D. I have written several articles on weight loss hypnosis and compulsive eating that are available on my website. There are some effective ways to use hypnotism to overcome emotional eating.
So just how can weight loss hypnosis fix the above problems? Let’s cover them one at a time.
In paragraph “A” above: Conditioned responses can be “eliminated” quickly and easily using a avenue that I call the “Flash.” The flash trains the unconscious mind to setup new responses. In the above example, the subject had unconsciously combined the impression of food in the hand, with the TV. Each time he / she sat down to watch the TV, the unconscious mind filled in the missing part of the depiction: It “Flashed” the picture of the food in the hand, and the subject felt a urge, and an urge to eat.
The Flash is a scheme that lets us program the subconscious to use the visualization of the TV as a trigger for a visualization of yourself watching TV without eating. When we lose the image of the food, we lose the cravings.
When we momentarily disassociate (see ourselves from the point of view that another person would), we are not able to sense our feelings (cravings and urges).
When we see ourselves in a behavior (watching TV without eating), we feel a strong compulsion to generate that behavior. So the subject loses the cravings, and actually gets a compulsion to reject food.
In paragraph “B” above: The subject is eating and drinking for relaxation and pleasure. We teach the subject self-hypnosis for weight loss, because the very essence of the hypnotic state is deep relaxation.
And we utilize the “Flash” to program the subconscious to use the mental images and thoughts that are triggering feelings of annoyance and nervous tension, as triggers for secondary mental pictures and thoughts that will trigger the relaxation response. When the subject feels more relaxed overall, oral cravings are greatly diminished.
In paragraph “C” above: We discussed impulsive eating which makes the person overweight. The “behavior” of being overweight then provides some sort of emotional protection. So we use a scheme called an NLP Six-Step Reframe, which programs the subconscious to be responsible for making the subject automatically substitute some other more acceptable behavior that will provide the same emotional protection, in place of being overweight. And that reframe will abandon the compulsion to eat for emotional purposes.

How To Hypnotize – The Techniques

The induction is the process that helps people go into a state of hypnosis, where they will be more susceptible to suggestion, and where their unconscious mind will take messages onboard. People choose to go into this state because they want to achieve a certain change or improvement in a specific part of their lives, usually.
How a hypnotist carries out an induction can vary greatly. Different techniques work well for different people. There can be hundreds or even thousand of induction scripts or approaches.
In therapeutic hypnosis, known as hypnotherapy, we generally use a technique we call progressive relaxation. This means helping the person to become progressively more and more relaxed until they eventually fall into the state of hypnosis. It’s a gradual process, helped along by suggestions of continued relaxation. I’ll ask them to close their eyes, of course, and then ask them to start to take some nice long deep breaths. This really helps to relax people.
One way that I find very effective in getting people to relax is to have them concentrate on different muscles, or different body parts. Obviously when you do this, you naturally become more relaxed. I like to start with their heads, face and neck muscles, and work my way down, along their entire body, focusing on one muscle or body part at a time, until they are completely relaxed, literally from head to toe. You could do it the other way around I suppose. I choose to work downward as it correlates with sinking deeper into total relaxation. We always refer to that process as going down, further down. So I just prefer to use the technique working downward.
The hypnosis induction technique that most people would be familiar with is obviously what they’ve seen in stage hypnosis. That’s a very different approach from therapeutic, hypnotherapy inductions. In stage hypnosis they use a very authoritarian approach, very direct induction. They have to. They need to keep a crowd of several hundred people entertained, which necessitates impact. Plus there is a visual impact achieved when a hypnotist executes an induction, a very sharp, direct induction, and the subject falls to the floor or otherwise gives some defining visual signal that he’s hypnotized.
The handshake induction is somewhat commonly recognized as well, but in reality, a stage hypnotist would not attempt this technique without first assuring himself that the subject is already hypnotized, or at least highly susceptible.
In hypnotherapy we have no need to make a visual impression on an audience. The same is true of self hypnosis recordings. In self hypnosis recordings a laid back approach is used, composed of many different elements, and is usually based on the theory of progressive relaxation. It is highly effective. Hypnotism in Real Life: Have You Experienced It?

Someone offhandedly comments that a salesperson hypnotized them into a purchase. Obama is seen by some as having hypnotized voters into voting for him. A commercial, an effective teacher, a persuasive friend, is characterized as having hypnotic powers.
When a man spends more time with his new girlfriend than with his buddies, you may hear them joke “That woman hypnotized poor Phil!”
The idea, facetious or not, is that Phil is choosing her over them only because he has lost his free will.
But unlike its portrayal in the horror films of yesteryear, hypnotism does not remove free will.
A charismatic leader like Jim Jones was not using mere hypnosis; rather, every action he took, every comment he made, and every detail of his organization and its physical surroundings was constructed to create blind obedience.
Proper hypnosis, on the other hand, is a cooperative, respectful endeavor where the client is in charge, and the practitioner supplies technical expertise to support the client’s healthful needs and desires.
Yes, you may allow yourself to be swept up by a moment, emotion, persuasive argument, attractive visual, or set of tasty words, but most of the time you are simply choosing a feeling you prefer.
The key words here are “you” and “choosing.”
In a hypnosis session-a genuine, in-the-office-with-a-certified-hypnotist session-you have free will, despite movies and books that fantasize otherwise.
For example:
Do you know someone who attended a smoking-cessation session solely to get family members to quit nagging? If the client isn’t choosing to quit, and shows up only to say he made the effort, he will likely start smoking again despite the skill of the practitioner.
This is a demonstration of free will at work.
People fall in love because they want to and have encountered someone who matches their criteria for Love Object.
Most people know only their conscious criteria for a mate (gender, age, looks, personality type, educational and economic stats) and not their unconscious criteria.
Unconscious criteria can diverge strongly from the conscious, which is why your love choices can shock your friends and even you.
If you were raised in a household with an ill parent, you may find yourself attracted to potential mates who are unwell or needy.
Consciously, you want someone fit, strong, and athletic. But you are adept at handling illness and weakness, and unconsciously you feel most useful, skilled, and fulfilled when doing that.
Looking back, you might recall that many of your love interests had or developed chronic ailments. Conversely, someone who grew up in such a situation may bolt from a relationship the moment the partner is diagnosed with a health concern.
Either way, you may be oblivious to the unconscious, below-the-surface elements that influenced your choice. Is this hypnosis?
Notice that in both cases, your inner self was acting to protect you based on how it defines self-protection.
I like this definition of hypnosis offered by Cal Banyan: “A heightened state of suggestibility, such that the suggestions given are accepted as being true and affect the beliefs, habits, perceptions and behaviors of an individual in varying degrees according to the depth of hypnosis established.” (You can find more detail at his website www.hypnosis.org .)
What I like about this thought is the indication that at particular times and circumstances, we are indeed more open to suggestions made to us, and we take them in. Then we tend to behave accordingly.
When we are suggestible, we are drawn up in a current, absorbed in a desirable feeling perhaps, and moved to act in ways we might not otherwise. This is not the same as blind compliance. Our subconscious minds, when acting healthfully, vet the situation and deter us from most dangers.
To some this is still scary. They would rather not be suggestible. But what would we be moved to do if we never embraced such a feeling? Would anyone run into a fiery building to save a child, or move across the world to chance a new love relationship?
Would anyone labor late into the night for years to develop a lifesaving vaccine…if we didn’t take in the suggestion that we could make great and powerful change?
In fact, what if we weren’t suggestible at all (if that’s possible)? Imagine if nothing could influence us, nothing could change us, nothing could open us up to a new point of view-except maybe empirical evidence-and how much of that do we encounter outside the lab?
Most intelligent people want to grow and evolve over the course of their lifetime. Hypnosis with the assistance of a competent, trustworthy practitioner is a pleasant experience that can help you make desired changes easily and permanently.

A Walk Through the Hypnotic Induction

Concerning the technique of the induction of hypnotic trances, this is a relatively simple matter requiring primarily time, patience, and careful attention to and consideration for the subjects, their personalities, and their emotional attitudes and reactions. Basically, there is no set form or pattern to follow. One needs the respect, confidence, and trust of a subject, and then one suggests fatigue, a desire for sleep and rest, an increasing feeling of sleep, and finally a deep sound restful sleep.

These suggestions are given repetitiously, with gradual progression from one to the next, always with careful reassurance of the subjects as they make response to them. The making of passes, the use of crystal balls, the staring into the subject’s eyes, and various other mystical procedures belong to vaudeville or ancient history. One simply, persuasively, and patiently suggests sleep of a restful character until the subject does sleep, and then the subject is instructed to remain asleep until all reasonable purposes are accomplished. There should be no forcing or rushing of subjects, and every effort should be made to enable the subjects to appreciate any physical feeling they have suggestive of sleep. This simple technique can be learned by anyone, and anybody who has been hypnotized can employ it to hypnotize others, given cooperation and the patience to make use of it.

As for awakening the subject, one can suggest an arousal directly, or give the subject suggestions to the effect that he is slowly and progressively awakening, repeating these suggestions until the subject is fully awake. Once the trance state has been induced, there will become manifest various general phenomena characteristic of hypnosis, though not all are necessarily manifested by each individual subject. Foremost is the condition termed rapport, in which the hypnotic subjects respond only to the hypnotist. In the deep trance they are seemingly incapable of hearing or seeing anything unless so instructed by the hypnotist. However, this rapport may be transferred to others by appropriate suggestions by the hypnotist.

A second phenomenon is catalepsy. As a result of the hypnosis, there develops in the subjects an increase in muscular tonus so that there seems to be the same condition as exists in the stuporous catatonic patient manifesting flexibilitas cerea. Thus, the subject’s hand, raised up in the air by the hypnotist, is held in that position apparently without fatigue until the hypnotist either puts it down or instructs the subject to lower it.

Amnesia constitutes another phenomenon of interest. Particularly after a deep trance the subject tends to have a profound amnesia for everything that occurred in the trance situation. This amnesia is subject to control, since the hypnotist can suggest the recovery of the memory of some or all items of the trance experience, or the subject may deliberately set himself the task of remembering everything. This phenomenon is most inconstant and uncertain, depends upon many individualistic and situational factors. In an experimental procedure the amnesia can be demonstrated to be as resistant to all nonhypnotic forces and as profound as amnesias developing pathologically.

Suggestibility is, of course, a primary feature of hypnosis, and is necessarily present. However, there is always a need, if serious and satisfactory purposes are to be achieved, to give suggestions in accord with the subject’s understandings and desires, although in the type of hypnosis practiced on the vaudeville stage, ridiculous and undignified suggestions can be given. In the experimental psychological laboratory any number of behavioral responses can be suggested and subjected to study, such as suggestions of amnesia, recovery of memories, hallucinations, delusions, anesthesias, deafness, blindness, identifications, disorientation, etc. In the medical situation suggestions relating to the problem in hand can be given, such as the suggestion to recall a forgotten troublesome traumatic life experience, or the suggestion to avoid or to meet adequately some difficult problem. However, regardless of the suggestibility of the subject, there is frequently a primary need to give suggestions indirectly rather than directly and dogmatically as if hypnotic suggestions were miraculous in effect.
